Shotover River
Once called 'the richest river in the world'. Located within a wildlife reserve near Frankton, with strict access rules.
History
In 1862, two Māori prospectors, Hakaria and Kereopa, discovered gold here. The Shotover quickly became legendary — miners reportedly pulled nuggets straight from cracks in the schist. The river produced an estimated £2 million in gold during the rush (billions in today's money).
Best Spots to Try
- 1Schist bedrock outcrops
- 2Behind large boulders in the designated zone
Local Tips
Access is restricted to the designated fossicking zone only. The water is cold and fast — don't wade deep. Focus on schist bedrock cracks where fine gold accumulates. This river produces 'flour gold' — very fine particles that require patience to recover.
