7km southwest of Reefton. Excellent walking tracks through historic mining country with camping and fire facilities.
History
Named for the slab huts built by early miners, this area was part of the extensive Reefton goldfield. Reefton was New Zealand's first town with electric street lighting — powered by the wealth of gold. The walking tracks pass old mining relics.

Take the walking tracks to understand the scale of historic operations here. The upper creek sections are less worked over. Good metal detecting territory. The Reefton area produces both alluvial and quartz gold.
