Waiho River
Located near Franz Josef. Glacial gold deposits in a stunning alpine setting with Mount Cook views.
History
The Waiho (meaning 'smoking water' in Māori, referring to mist from the glacier) has been carrying gold from the mountains for millennia. Early miners worked the lower reaches, but the dramatic landscape made large-scale operations difficult.
Best Spots to Try
- 1Exposed gravel bars
- 2Side streams entering the main river
Local Tips
Spectacular scenery but challenging conditions. The glacial flour makes the water milky — you can't see the bottom. Work exposed gravel bars. The gold here is very fine and angular. Bring warm clothing even in summer.
